  1. No, skype requires an internet connection.  Internet is via Dial-up (phone line required) DSL (phone line required) Cable or Satelite.  In any case, it costs you a bunch to have internet, I currently pay 45 bucks a month for roadrunner.  Dial-up will run you about 20 for the phone line and 10 for the ISP and that is slow.

  2. No because they'd be the ones providing the internet connection

Home phone service?  They'd probably just be reselling a line from the local phone company.

  3. No because you can't use skype from your mobile unless you have a phone plan.

  4. They are definitely feeling the heat.

But, unfortunately for us, they just charge us higher DSL Internet fees and higher cell phone charges.

Most people now days seem to be addicted to cell phones, and the phone companies make up the differences there.

Myself, I don't use cell phones.  So, they can't get me there.

In fact, I completely disconnected my telephone and DSL service.... so they can't get me there, either.

I have my Internet service through my local Cable TV provider.

Then I only use VoIP for my home phone and long distance calling.  I only subscribe to BYOD and pay-as-you-go VoIP services.  I don't get locked into any contracts.

I still pay $35/month for my Cable Internet service, but my total phone calling costs, including long distance, is only about $12/month.... total.

So, the telco's aren't making much money off of me....

I do use Skype, and have been for about 3 years.  But I also use other services like Efonica, Gizmo5, PcCall, and GrandCentral.

And for my home phone replacement services (no PC required to use) I use BYOD/pay-as-you-go services like CallCentric, InPhonex, Les.net, and Voip.ms.  I supply my own ATA adapter and configure it myself for my VoIP services of choice....
