  1. if you wrap your hands, it gives better support. if your hands are hurting when you play, then it might be a good idea to wrap them. I know that i use to wrap my wrist for games as a libero because of all the pressure that was put on my lower arms. as a setter, it will help support your hands and fingers.

you can always try it and if it doesnt work, then there could be something wrong.

    hope it helps.

  2. Hi! I play club volleyball. I am not a setter but i do set and my hands do hurt after. What you could do is soak your hands in hot water. Also if you go to any sport stores you should get a stress ball. This helps because you are squeezing the ball and it is building muscle. That way your hands are tougher so when you  set the ball you will have nice strong hands and they wont hurt.

  3. I've been playing social volleyball for around 20 years now, sometimes playing up to 7 hours a week - now it is more like 5 hours?  I'm more of a setter than a spiker.  Anyway I do say - that if your fingers? hurt - then you can dig for your sets, if you are a good digger?  This might sound unusual - but as long as the sets go where they are suppose to... then it should do alright.  I think player's get injuries because of the hard volleyball they are using.  Most volleyballs have too much air pressure in them, making them 'hard' (ie. having no bounce - no 'give' to the ball.  I recomend that you should be able to press your thumbs about 1/8th of an inch into the ball.  There may be some protests - that it is "flat" at first, but when players start using it, they will soon adapt to it.  Even super soft volleyballs will be hard, with too much air pressure.  Volleyballs are to be volleyed with different parts of your body - and so, it it is not like a soccer ball, or basketball etc.

I do prefer using a special lightweight Training Series volleyball - the Mikasa VUL500 for social volleyball.  This is especially for 12 year olds and younger.  It is a very 'fun' ball to use - you can do a lot more 'saves' with it.  It is not suitable for serious tournaments or training for tournaments because of it is so lightweight, ie. non-standard.

When the volleyball travels fast and high - you want to avoid contact with your fingers (there is an alternative technique to handle such balls) because you can easily get sore / damaged fingers - and it can take up to 2 months to fully recover from a bad injury (you don't want to get injured again, while your fingers are healing - delaying the healing process).

Wrapping your fingers makes sense - if you can do that...  It should help reduce further injury in the meantime.
