If my cat had his rabbies shot a few months ago, a bat bite couldn't give him rabbies, right? ?

I don't think he was bit but an answer to another question I asked said a cat killed a bat after being bit and then ended up coming down with rabbies. I think if my cat was bit I would have found him hiding under the sofa but who knows.... I haven't found a bite mark yet but maybe there's one hiding...

  1. ok...tell me this! is there a bat under your couch or a cat!?!?

and it depends on where you live...because most bats don't get rabies unless they have some disease already...the shot would prevent your cat from getting rabies too..

  2. You give your cat the RV shot to protect them from contracting rabies from wild animals. Normally if they are bit , you would want to bring them to the vet for a booster RV shot and have the wounds cleaned.  You should bring him to the vet's to have him checked out to make sure that he was not bit...puncture wounds can be small and hard to find and cat's usually won't exhibit an illness (if the bite caused an abscess, etc) until a few days and they are feeling really bad....and your always better safe then sorry, so give your vet a call, and get a professional opionion !!

  3. The reason you give a rabies vaccination is so that if an animal is bitten by another that carries the rabies virus, they will not get rabies.

If your pet has had the rabies vaccinations on schedule, then he should be protected.  The vet could always do a titer to see how much of the rabies antibody the cat has, and then you would know if he was protected or not.  The vet may also want to give another vaccination, just to be safe.

Best person to ask?  The vet.

  4. If your cat had his rabies shot a few months ago he is good for a year or three years. If you think he was bitten by a bat it would be good to take him to the vet and get him checked out.
