Question:

If my central air a/c capacitor is good and the compressor is fine, why doesn't the fan turn?

The ohms check on compressor came out good, but doesn't run. Doesn't even try to, i.e. 'hum'. The fan doesn't spin (it does if you tap it with your finger but doesn't keep going). The capacitor is from an identical, same everything, good running unit. Still has 220 volts goin 2 it. The line has 112 lbs of freon in it. It hasn't run all year. Ran like a champ last year. Are there gremlins that come out at nite and ruin inncent people's central air units?

  1. If the fan has 220 v on the wires going to the fan off the load side of the relay the only two possibilities are the fan is bad or the capacitor is bad or weak, even though it works on another unit.  Replace the fan with the fan from the unit that the capicitor came off of, or buy a new capacitor and fan motor they go bad pretty often.  If the fan unit was not running for any length of time the compressor may have tripped out on high limit overload, make sure you have 220v to the wires leading to the compessor from the relay. Also the compressor will have a small box where the wires enter the compressor this cover will come off and there may be a reset that you need to push.  Many have an auto reset and that may be bad.  If you are not sure of your electrical ability you need a serviceman or electician.  Be safe and most test can be done deenergized, but not all.

  2. Check the contactor to make sure you have both legs of the voltage going to the compressor.Best of Luck,,

  3. Do you hear the contactor humming if not check the low volt wire to the unit.
