If my dad claimed me as a dependent, do I get a stimulus check?

I made over 10,000 last year and filed. I was under the impression that if you worked, you would receive a check? I could understand if he got my refund, but why exactly does he get the stimulus check?

  1. No. Since your dad claimed your exemption he will receive a stimulus check with an additional $300 dollars for you. Sorry!

  2. So many incorrect answers.  Dependents are not eligible for the stimulus rebate, you will not receive one, and he will not receive $300 for you.  Go to www.irs.gov for more details, there is a link on the first page.

  3. If you are over 17, he doesn't even get your stimulus check. It was an "overlooked" area in the package.

My daughter got the short end also. But in exchange she got free room and board.

Sandra, it is possible to claim someone as a dependant that filed their own taxes. They just can not claim themselves as a deduction on the tax form.

  4. Your impression is wrong.  Dependents do NOT get a stimulus check.  And parents only get the extra $300 for their child if the child was under 17 as of the end of 2007.  Why?  Because that's how the law was written.

  5. I'm pretty sure Sandra is right on this one, there may be some issues with you filing and being claimed as a dependant.  Besides that, I don't think 10k was enough to get a part in the "stimulous checks".   Call the IRS or get on the website just to be sure, she's SO right, the penalties and interest will KILL you later on down the road when they figure it out if something did go wrong.   Better safe than sorry.

  6. If you filed how did he claim you as a dependent.  In a few years the IRS will be questioning him because he claimed you as a dependent and you filed a return.  If you filed a return then you are entitled to the stimulus check too.  Call the IRS you have a mess, 1-800-829-1040.  Take care of the problem now or they will charge interest and penalties down the road and it will cost your dad more money in the long run if it isn't corrected now.

  7. If your dad claimed you, then HE will get a stimulus check. Working is one thing, but you had to file your own income taxes to be eligible for the stimulus check. That was the rule.

  8. This is from www.irs.gov I hope this helps:

Q: I know some people won’t get a stimulus payment. How do I know if I’m one of them?

A: You won’t get a stimulus payment in 2008, if any of the following apply to you:

    You don’t file a 2007 tax return.

Your net income tax liability is zero and your qualifying income is less than $3,000. To determine your qualifying income, add together your wages, net self-employment income, nontaxable combat pay, Social Security benefits, certain Railroad Retirement benefits and certain veterans’ payments.

You can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return (whether or not you actually are claimed as a dependent on someone else's return). For example, this would include a child or student who can be claimed on a parent’s return.

You do not have a valid Social Security Number.

    You are a nonresident alien.

You file Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040PR or Form 1040SS for 2007.

    Q. My child turned 17 in December 2007. Do I still get the extra child payment?

    A. Not in this case. Eligible taxpayers who qualify for a payment may receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. But to qualify, a child must be under age 17 as of Dec. 31, 2007. In other words, if a child was 16 or younger at the end of 2007 and meets the other eligibility requirements, then the child will qualify for the $300 stimulus payment.
