We are newlyweds as of Feb. and are excited about serving our country and the career and education aspects, but are a little nervous about joining because we don't want to be separated for years. He wants to be Military Police and I want to be 68W Medic. He was a civillian Cop and I am an EMT basic, and have recently completed my EMT intermediate class. I am also curious about rank. He is prior service (E5) and quite a bit older than I. I'm 25, he's 37, I passed ASVAB and he passed physical, so we are hoping to go to MEPS to sign next week. I do not have any children yet, but my husband has a son and two (ex) step daughters from his ex wife. I hope to have kids someday but am afraid of the pressures of army life on kids. Any advice for me on all of this?

  1. Anything is possible and when the stars align correctly it may happen but there is one thing that is a constant no matter what branch of the military it is....

Needs of the service come before those of the military member - you are being paid to do a job.

  2. if he has physical  custody..you are ineligible to both go Active Duty.   one of you would have to go Reserves.

if, however, his son does not live with you at least 51% of the time, you are both fine to Go AD.

spousal co location is NEVER guaranteed.  and they consider 150 miles to be co located.  They try.  they never promise.

  3. You should probably talk to a local recruiter about that. He might be willing/able to do something about it.

  4. My wife and I shared the exact same platoon within our first 3 duty stations.  So don't believe the hype.   We were both in a highly technical shortage MOS, so there wasn't anywhere else to put us, but working side-by-side.

  5. they can put you together, usually within 50 miles, because you want different jobs it will be a lot easier to put you in the same place (you can't have the same immediate command)

  6. Is it possible to be given the same duty location? Yes, it's possible.  But it is also possible that one could be stationed at Fort Drum, NY and the other in California if that's where your particular specialties are needed at the time.  You will probably NEVER be stationed in the same unit.

The Navy calls it "Spouse co-location". Co-location means the duty stations are within a 50 mile radius. An example would be one sailor stationed on a ship homeported at Little Creek Amphib base, and the other spouse stationed at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station.  Since they are within 50 miles of each other, the spouses are said to be co-located.
