If my husband has a PPO insurance that covers 100% maternity how do I get added as his wife?

His yearly deductible is $2500...but he also has an HSA account that helps and makes sense. Before it was so confusing but i researched this PPO (as I never carried it before) and I like the concept. Ok...back to question...They accept single or family...for maternity care can i just be added on with no change in the deductibe. MY friends boyfriend payed for the babies insurance and her insurance paid for her care. It confuses me.

  1. For the company I worked for and my husband's company, we could only add someone once a year.  Usually towards the end of the year the company could allow "updates".  Of course if you have life changing event, like a baby, then you can add them during the middle of the year.

You need to ask your husband's HR or insurance company what their policy is.

Usually the deductible doesn't change - only the amount paid to the insurance company (money deducted from the paycheck) will go up.

  2. if you are already pregnant when you become insured they may not cover maternity...and if there is no pre-existing waiting period, usually you need to get added on during his open enrollment period for insurance.  it is normally in october with most companies.  many companies will allow you to be added after open enrollment, but you will have a preexisting condition clause.  preexisting conditions are usually noncovered the first year of coverage.  and if you are pregnant when you become covered, that is pre existing.  anything you have ever been treated for prior to coverage is considered preexisting.  and if you do have a baby, the baby needs to be added immediately after birth, or the insurance may cover the delivery, but not the prenatal care

  3. He needs to check with his employer. There is a form to add you as being covered. There are certain rules that apply. Best thing to do is have him speak with HR at his company.

  4. Unless it is open enrollment he must show a change in status and typically need to notify the employer within 30 days of the event. This change in status could be marriage or loss of coverage by you. Other than that few companies will let you join other than open enrollment time.

    Sorry!

  5. If this is group coverage and the premiums are taken out pre-tax, you must wait until open enrollment to be added unless there is a qualifying life change (e.g.-you just got married or lost your insurance.) Check with his HR dept. If you are added though, there is no exclusion for pre-existing on pregnancy.

If this is a private policy, usually there is a waiting period for maternity care of 9-18 months.

Either way, when you are added, there will be an increase in the premium (that is the monthly amount you pay to be covered on the insurance.)

If he currently has single coverage, the deductible is $2,500-check the policy to see what the "Family Deductible" is. Usually it is twice what the single deductible is.

EDIT: What I meant by the deductible doubling was, you will each have your own deductible to pay. Yours and your husbands medical expenses will be applied separately towards each of your deductibles!
