I want to be homeschooled because I'm suffering from depression and its affecting my schoolwork. I can't stay awake because of it. I'm taking medication for it.

I don't have any friends that are homeschooled and I was wondering if my mom agrees to homeschool me, what does she have to do for it to be legal? Get a teaching certificate? !? (I hope not!!!) Please inform me.

  1. just to have a good curriculum and to make sure you are consistantly working at it.  good luck!

  2. No she does not need a teaching degree... depending on where you live there are many options. There are free online charter schools and then there are private ones as well.

  3. State requirements are one thing, but they are pretty flexible really. You and your mum need to figure out what sort of education you want and she wants you to have. There is no need to limit yourself to the state school curriculum or a boxed curriculum if you don't want to. Most people, I think, mix and match to suit their needs.

Mum absolutely doesn't need a teaching certificate! She's not teaching in the same way as a school teacher. She's parenting, and already knows how to do that.

Draw up a table with year level across the top and subjects down the side. Choose what subjects you want, and need to study. Then go about filling in the table with curriculums, community college classes, library resources etc. There is no "one size fits all" curriculum, so choose the things that sound right for you.

  4. Yes, it is legal in all states, and no, your mom doesn't need a teaching certificate.  If you can let us know which state you live in, we can give you specifics.

Online charters are available in some states, but they don't work for all families.  With your depression, you and your mom may want to work out your own coursework.

If you can let us know which state you live in and what grade you're in/how old you are, we can give you specifics.
