If my parents own the condo can I have a dog?

My parents bought the condo I live in but there are rules that say we aren't allowed to have pets. Does this only apply to people who rent or also to those who own their condos? And would I get in trouble for having a dog?

  1. Yes you would get in trouble having a dog. The rules are for the building and all its occupants. Guests can't bring dogs etc.

  2. By buying into a condo your parents agreed to obey the by laws of the condo to wit, if the condo says no pets then its not pets, if the HOA finds you have a dog they can fine you per day until the dog is removed

Parents could have bought into a condo that was pet friendly but they choose to buy into a condo that does not allow pets it was their choice

  3. There is most likely a condo association that makes up rules for anyone living there.  If they say no pets allowed, that mean everyone whether you own or rent.

  4. No pets is no pets.    It applies to everyone.

  5. The same rules apply to owners and tenants.  But...if you are in Ontario, condos are governed by their declaration, by-laws and rules.  If the no-dog provision is only in the rules, you may have a chance if you can show that the rule is "unreasonable" or has not been enforced.  The rules are only passed by the Board of Directors, and can be changed relatively easily.  If the no-dog provision is in the declaration, then you would have to change the declaration, which requires approval of 80% of the owners...so unlikely.

  6. If the condominium bylaws prohibit dogs, your parents are obliged to follow the bylaws to which they agreed at time of purchase. (They DID agree, whether they realize it or not.)

    You cannot have a dog.
