Question:

If my quartz countertop comes cracked, should I refuse installation?

I'm getting my countertop today installed in my kitchen. The slab around the sink isn't too big and there are no corners. I've seen stories on HGTV of installers accidentally cracking it around the thinners areas around the sink.

If his happens today, and it gets cracked during installation or from delivery, should I refuse it and demand a new piece? Thanks.

  1. Yes, once it's in then they'll demand payment.  Most contractors should be good about it and if they aren't they may be trying to rip you off.

  2. if it is broken don't accept

  3. Yes. This is why you are paying for professional installation.

  4. Hi Ryan,

This is what separates the pros from the joes.  Any type of professional installer is responsible for having the skills to properly install their product without damaging your home or breaking the piece.  Should he not follow through with that, absolutely, he should replace it and provide that which he originally agreed to do.  If you wanted to have a cracked slab of quartz you could have installed it with day labor and saved a bundle.  The only situation where you might be responsible is in the event the fabricator made you aware of a section that might break and urged for some type of reinforcement to be done, seam to be created, or fixture to be moved and you declined.  In this case you might be partially responsible for asking the professional to do something against his best judgment, a quality you are paying for.
