Question:

If my tanning bed says it is 24 amps, can it run off of a 110V outlet or do I need to install a 220V outlet?

I bought this tanning bed from someone that told me it ran off of a regular 110V outlet. The plug obviously does not fit into a regular 110V receptacle but changing the receptacle is easy. Before I change that though, I need to know if the 110V outlet can handle 24 amps. I have changed 110V to 220V before and it's a pain, so I need to know what kind of hassle I'm in for. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you!

  1. Its more than just the outlet you need to be concerned with.  Both the gauge of the wiring in your wall, and the circuit breaker at the other end need to be rated for 25 amps as well.  You very well may need to upgrade the wiring to handle this amperage, at which point it would be a better option to just switch to a 220V line instead.

Contact an electrician, many offer free estimates, and you can have a conversation with them about your options.

  3. Does it run on 110 or 220?  If the plug is designed for 220, changing the plug is only going to cause problems.  If it draws 24 amps, the circuit needs to handle it, so does the wiring.  Fire is not fun.

If you are not a pro, call one to do things right for you.

  4. Most household receptacles are either a 15 or 20 amp circuit.   Just changing the receptacle to fit your plug WILL NOT allow you to draw 24 amps.  The circuit breaker will overload and trip.   You must run a separate dedicated line to your appliance.

  5. Amperes and volts are different. An amp is the amount of current. you can have .000001V at 1000000A! So just get a power converter that will supply you with what you need; you can keep the voltage at 120 if you wish, but manufacturers usually require 200V or more for UV tanning beds.

  6. I don't think 120v can carry 24amps.  The max amps I've seen is 20.  You should be able to look up on the internet or the plug should have the what kind of outlet you need.  Don't just change something, you've blow your self up.  I know I have before.  Treat electricity with caution, even when you know its dead.
