  1. dont buy a blu-ray player yet....i would just get a HD DVD player for right now....they are alot cheaper and the HD/Blu-Ray war isnt over yet....plus the movies itself are cheaper for HD than blu-ray too.....this way u can actually get ur 1080p as long as u get a tru HD DVD player

  2. they are not more or less expensive first off. For every hd-dvd, except the cheapest one, there is a blu-ray counterpart that is just as inexpensive. Unfortunately, your tv is a set resolution, and in your case, the highest progressive screen it can produce is 720 lines of resolution. 1080i is an interlaced signal that, while good, cannot produce the desired progressive screen with 1080 lines. No, it will not upconvert your tv's resolution despite the player's resolution.

  3. Your HDTV is compatible.  The Blu-Ray Disc player will down-convert into 1080i.

And to answer all those that are wondering about the HD DVD/Blu-Ray war, Blu-Ray will be the winner because Blu-Ray has a lot more backing than the HD DVD format.  Not only is Blu-Ray a Sony product, but Warner Bros. and Hollywood Video will be exclusively Blu-Ray if that's to give you any indication as to where the market is going for high definition movie market.

    Happy Home Theatering!

  4. If your TV is only 1080i look to make sure you have an HDMI input. If you do not have HDMI then Blu-Ray and HDDVD are both a waste of money for you in terms if video quality. Unless you have HDMI connections, BlueRay and HD DVD will downconvert the image to 480p maximum. This has to do with all the copy protection implemented on DVD. It is mandated by the studios that if you do not use HDMI with HDCP(high definition content protection) you can not display HD video from a dvd it must be downconverted to 480. The studios do not want people copying HD disks.

Make sure you have HDMI before you buy either of the 2 High definition DVD formats.

  5. first off the hd dvd blu ray war is over... the only way for you to get me to buy an hd dvd player is get it for free. Its a dying system that just is not dead yet. Buying an hd dvd player would be stupid. Back to your question... your tv will downscale to 1080i instead of playing in 1080p. However, a blu ray on your tv will look substantially better than a standard dvd.

  6. no it will recognize that its only 1080i and downscale to 1080i
