Question:

If my tortoise table is right next to a window, do I still need a UVB lamp??

For a good portion of the day there are sun rays directly shining into the table...but does the glass of the window block the UVB?

Oh, and do UVB lamps become hot?

Sorry about all of the questions :S

  1. UVB rays do not go through windows - you would still need a lamp.  I let my tortoise walk around outside several days week to get his sun naturally and then supplement with a small UVB lamp.

UVB lamps don't get hot - they're flourescent bulbs.

  2. you can't put a tortoise by a window, the glass will filter out  all the uv rays and all that will happen is your tortoise will over heat as you can't control the heat that comes in through the window. a uv light does not usually get too hot  it emits rays and not much heat, but if you are worried fit your heat lamps with a thermostat they are not expensive and you have the security of knowing the tortoise will get the correct heat and if the temp in the house gets too hot hte lamp will not come on so your tortoise can get a natural heat and not get too hot, don't worry about all the questions you are only trying to make sure you are doing your best for your tortoise and no one can be annoyed at that, best of luck with your tortoise honey it sounds like you are going to do your best for it

  3. nope...

but in the winter...you have to buy one.

  4. NO!  Neither UVA or UVB can pass through glass or plastic (even the lenses/coverings on reptile light fixtures need to be removed).  It is also a very bad idea to place a tank (although I'm guessing you're using a tortoise table) where sunlight can shine directly on it as it is very likely to cook your pet.  Don't forget to supplement the diet with calcium as well as getting a UVB lamp.

UVB lamps are like most other flourescent bulbs and stay far cooler than any incandescent bulb but I still wouldn't suggest touching one (but I can touch the fixture even after it's been on for 12+ hours).  As long as the bulb isn't directly touching the screen top you can rest the fixture on it.

  5. Unless your window is made of quartz, you need the UVB lamp. Glass passes IR but not UV light. I hope you have part of the table in the shade, where the tortoise can cool off.
