i recently acquired 2 JL 12W3v1 subwoofers for free with no amp. so i ordered a 2 channel 1200 watt amp, pushing 300 watts RMS to each channel...assuming that they were 300watts RMS each, because the newer 12W3v2 subs are rated at that. i recently found out that my subs are rated for 250 watts RMS. I want to know if i should send the amp back and get a 1000 watt or if i should be ok with a little extra power

  1. Jl is dome good quality car audio,I'm sure it wont hurt them.

  2. i agree with the panther. if you feed them too much power they might short out. not to mention sound like c**p.

  3. no running alittle more power than is required to subs will not hurt them. i was running 600 rms to subs that were 400 and i never had a problem. if for somereason they are "clipping" or making a wierd noise then simply turn the gain(bass boost on the amp) all the way down, turn the music up as loud as you would possibly listen to it, then turn up the gain till your desired bass level. hope this helps

  4. Turn the gains down on the amp...I suggest getting professional help to make sure you wont damage your subs.  It's a simple adjustment and they won't charge you.

  5. Well since JL audio us a really good brand 50 watts RMS over wont hurt them. I have 2 kicker L5's that are rated at 600 watts RMS and i am running 750 into each of them.
