I'm hoping someone can provide more details about this...

On this website: http://www.health.state.ny.us/environmental/lead/leadbroc.htm

I read the following, which stated NOT to use a shop vac and to be sure to use a HEPA vac. I'm mostly just wondering if it would be okay to buy a HEPA vac for standard household use and then also use it to clean up the lead particles that are lying around from a recent repair (this is not a major lead cleanup). Here is what I read at the site:

A HEPA-equipped vacuum should be used on all surfaces (floors, walls, ceilings, woodwork, carpeting, furniture). DO NOT use a standard household vacuum or shop vacuum, which are not designed or equipped to trap lead dust particles. Then wet-mop hardwood surfaces with a solution containing a heavy-duty household cleaner (automatic dishwasher detergent or a lead-specific detergent). The wet-mopping should be followed by another HEPA vacuuming.

  1. NO!!!!!!!! You should not clean up lead based paint chips with a HEPA VAC.. Use a Shop Vac and make sure if it is a  lot that you take it to a hazardous waste disposal facility

( Usually at your local dump)

  2. NOOOO! There's still a chance that the vaccum could release the lead into the air.  Even microparticles can still do damage.  Don't risk it and pick the pieces up with duct tape or any tape.
