Because when fighting against the Democrats he needed leverage and cards to show at the very end. He chooses a woman who can have as much or as little influence on his administration as he wants and this way the accusations of a glass ceiling, etc, etc, all are discredited because he says "look who my running mate is." It's too bad he got to wait until after the DNC because an Obama/Clinton ticket would have looked so much better against this.
