  1. As Head of State  with parliament, the armed forces and the police all of whom have sworn an oath of loyalty to defend The Queen, I don't think Her Majesty will need to call on the services of a few knights for Her safety.

  2. i think its just an honorary title, can you see sean connery and elton john going into battle side by side to save the queen? hehe

  3. I think that she has the legal power to call all men "of the order" to her side at any time, but in reality you have to ask what military power these men possess. As was said before, many of the men 'knighted' are of no military importance, but where they can be very influential is for their prowess in other aspects of life. For example, the queen could call upon Elton John for aid in a time of need in that although he may not be able to fight in a war - he could use his popularity to aide the cause - bring attention to it, get funding, raise awareness and the such. I can also see him aiding the queen directly by visiting British soldiers abroad on 'entertainment tours' similar to the "USO" tours done in the U.S. So she may never call upon them to carry a sword, but she may ask them to be used in their proper capacities to better serve Great Britan.

  4. More of a noble honorary title
