  1. Go to this web site.  In the empty box in the middle of the left side of the page, type in the name of your chemical (or the formula for the chemical) and press enter.  You will get tons of info, including whether it is an acid or base:

  2. By knowing the compound you are dealing with.  You could also do research quick on the computer to find if its acidic or basic.

  3. Usually bases contains metals and nonmetals while acids only contain nonmetals. There are always exceptions however so i reccomend that you look the compounds up on the internet or something. If you have worked with acids and bases long enough, you can generally tell what is an acid and what is a base. There are many commonly used acids and bases so i suggest that you memorize them so you can recognize them easily the next time you see them.

  4. is the Ph stated in the problem because that would tell you which you are dealing with .
