If you convert barrels into cubic miles, you'll see that it takes a whole lot of oil to make a relatively insignificant volume when compared to the size of the earth.

100000000000 barrels in cubic miles (that's 100 billion barrels!) is about 2.8 cubic miles. Compare that with an estimated 260000000000 cubic miles for our planet.
