If one place decides to tell me that I'm hired can I say, "I'll think about it" and wait to see

if another place I really want to work at calls me for an interview or something

and if so, how long can I wait?

  1. Difficult.

    If the first one makes you an offer, accept gratefully and ask them to confirm it is writing.

    If (and this seems to be a big if) the second calls you for an interview, go for the interview.  Accept, if this is what you want.  

    Then write a polite letter to the first company saying that 'It is with much regret that I have to decline your offer".

    You do not have to give a reason - they will probably guess you have had a better offer.

    Having said all that, don't fall between two stools - lose the first and the second fails to materialize.

    You can really say that you need time to decide if the company has taken time to answer you.But if they say you that you are hired on the same day of the interview you actually shouldnt refuse it, as it shows that you are not too keen on to doing the job and therefore you need time. If you were not that keen you shouldnt have had been there.

    Yes but definitely if the company takes time in answering you, you can ask them for some time. You need to adhere to the time that you ask from them. Normally this time is only a week.It shouldnt exceed a weeks time.
