How can I find out if my family (kin) has unclaimed legacy that was left by one of our ancestors?

I know for the fact that one of my ancestors has an account overseas in the bank that receives interest from his finances since the first quarter of 19th century. I have some written documentation as evidence. I suspect that part of the estate was also left to my great grandfather (who is no longer alive) and as the only heir could be passed on to me. The bank is overseas; I know what its name was back then, but I am not sure if it kept the same name. I was wondering how and where I should get started to find out if I have any unclaimed legacy waiting for me? Who should I address: A lawyer, A private investigator, etc? Can I find out myself by doing an online search? Can I have a consultation with anyone for free, such as live chats with experts online? Or is there any site that could direct me.

  1. You go to the court of the ancestor in question, and look to see the probate records.  The executor of their estate is the person you need to contact.

Depending on how long ago this was, like if it's more than 25 years, you're not going to find ANYTHING.

You might be the LAST surviving heir of your great grandfather, but most likely, all the people in between you and he have already received the distributions.
