If one writes the correct zip code, but the wrong state abbreviation on a package, where will it go?

I know it sounds strange, but someone gave me a NJ zipcode and a NV abbreviation, so that's what I wound up writing.

Where will the package end up with this sort of problem (USPS)?

  1. From personal experience the Postal Service is used to the clerical errors from the senders of a package and I have discovered the most important part when sending the package is ensuring the zip code is correct because it is used as an identifying factor to confirm you city or state. However, the answer to your question is Yes your package will arrive to the correct state based on the zip code, but be mindful there may be a small delay.

  2. it should go to NJ, most postal workers only pay attention to the zip codes when sorting mail so it should most likely go where you were intending to send it, if where you wanted it to go was NJ.

  3. I think they mainly go by the ZIP code rather than the state abbreviation, especially if they see that that street address doesn't exist in Nevada... I'd just wait it out. It might take a bit longer to get your package, but the post office uses extremely sophisticated computers that can most likely determine and fix the problem.
