If people are the same wherever you go, then why do we need sociology?

The same eh?  Do you mean like valuing our children?  Like seeking enough income to provide survival? Yes the hierarchy of needs apply to all cultures.  However, those needs are satisfied by various efforts.  Sociology studies the effect of mass behavior.  The values depend on the "mass". Sociology provides raw data that can be further refined, but will ultimately provide a profile of the individual groups.  If we are to be an accepting society, it is important to understand what we accept, and why.

We need a micro-sociology to find out the particularities of the various cultures.

I don't know if people are the same wherever we go or not, but the societies and cultures definitely aren't the same. So we need the sociology.
