If people think it's so good to stand out, why do they all strive to look the same?

It's human nature. It's a form of trust. If you're different, they're scared of you.

Standing out is the only way to get noticed in our society, but very few are brave enough to actually be different.  Many people that take the risk to stand out are successful, but they almost never fit in with people that would be considered "normal", which makes up most of our society.  Being different can be really lonely.
