If planning to go abroad in the summer of 2009 when should planning start?

the sooner the better. you have to get a visa, a passport, and have everything straightened out with the university and accomodations. plus you will need to make a budget and raise some cash.

Depends on when and where you want to go.. you cant get flight prices or anything yet because most airlines only put them up about 10-11 months before hand.

I am going away on holiday in October and I started thinking about it in November and actually booked it in January!

If it is something complicated like a multi stop vacation then I would start looking at the logistics way in advance - even just to get me excited!!  If its going to be a simple trip I would still start looking at it!!  But I am a holiday person - I live from one vacation to the next...

It is totally up to you, depends on how many people you are trying to accommodate, how cheap you want to get it (the earlier you book the cheaper the deal) and how organised you are!  Also look at financials - estimate how much it is going to cost you so you know when you need to start saving!!
