  1. It is a tradition of British nobility to use the title a an alternative surname to distinguish between members of the same family.

  2. Because his father Prince Charles is known as the Prince of Wales

  3. He's Prince William of Wales

  4. Harry and William both use their surname as Wales...it is their father's title...Prince of Wales. Their younger cousins Beatrice and Eugenie use York...their father's title is the Prince of York.

  5. because his dad Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales, and William is William Wales

  6. Outdated and insulting royal protocol!

  7. Because he is the son of the Prince of Wales.

    best of luck to you!

  8. Royals use their ROYAL HOUSE NAMES or their titles. The Prince of Wales' family uses Wales,The Duke of York's uses York,The Earl of Wessex uses Wessex;it's just a way to differentiate between the different branches of the Windsor and Mountbatten-Windsor clan.

The Queen really doesn't use a surname, but a ROYAL HOUSE NAME;she is of The Royal House of Windsor. No titled royal really uses a surname;they use their title name or their royal house names.Surnames are used by those descendants who are not titled or an HRH. Visit http://www.royal.gov/uk for more information under Royal Family and family name.

  9. Cause he wants to be treated like every one else. As a normal young men, that just does his service to his country. I applaud that on him very much! Thanks to Princess Diana.

  10. William is the son of the Prince of Wales and while Charles is HRH Charles, The Prince of Wales, his sons (who are princes because they are his sons) are HRH The Prince William of Wales and HRH The Prince Henry of Wales.

But "HRH The Prince William of Wales" is a bit of a handful and does not really fit on ones lapel.   By tradition, princes who join the military use their first name and their territorial designation instead of a first-and-sur-name.

That gives us William Wales.   Were his cousin Beatrice to be in the military, she would be Beatrice York (rather than HRH The Princess Beatrice of York).

And finally, the Queen's surname is not "Windsor".   She does not have one.   Instead, she is a member of a Royal House whose name is "Windsor".   Those who are monarchs, royal princes or royal princesses do not have surnames but some use Windsor or Mountbatten Windsor where a surname would be called for. When Charles becomes king, he may choose to declare his royal house a continuation of the house of Windsor.   But unless he does so, he will be a member of the house of which his father is a member, the House of House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (as was his father;  Mountbatten is an English-language variation of Philip's mother's German surname).   It is likely that he will proclaim the continuation of his mother's house.

  11. thick as mince is there anyone out there who can help this person as I am too busy fighting off the demons from other countries and if I break to answer this question then loads can wave bye bye

  12. Because Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales so his sons are princes of Wales too.  William is known as William of Wales so for practicality, this is shortened to William Wales.

  13. As with Royal Family tradition, Prince William used "Wales" as a last name during his years of education, as has Prince Harry. William's York cousins in turn use "York" (other Royal Families also use their parents' title as their own working surname). Past precedent, however, is that such title-surnames are dropped from usage in adulthood, with either title alone or name and Mountbatten-Windsor being used on legal documents and banns of marriage.
