short on mortgage,never paid back and gave extra 2grand when left,any legal recourse landlord can do to me

Why would the landlord do anything to you if he owes you money??

The rent and the loan are two separate things.

You and the landlord need documentation in order for legal recourse.  Verbal agreements, basically comes down to he said/she said.  In any case, the landlord wouldn't be able to do anything to you.  Another matter if you want your money back.
