“If required, Nadal and Ferrer will play in the Davis Cup,” says Escañuela - Tennis News
Spain’s Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela, has turned the tables on the decision of Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal and world number five, David Ferrer’s non-participation in the Davis Cup 2012. He stated that
if there is a need for the two tennis aces at any stage of the tournament they will be included in the team without any doubt. This is a big news considering that the decision made by three members of 2011 Davis Cup team seems to be conditional.
The president cleared everyone’s mind with this statement, “I'm sure that as soon as they are required for the commitment they have with our country, who have always shown, and the final result of this victory in the Davis Cup,
I am absolutely convinced that if Spain will need them to be next to Spain, our country and do as they have done all weekend everywhere: to raise the Spanish flag and the anthem of Spain sound.”
This might be a depressing statement for those players who were considering it an opportunity to represent their nation at the elite platform and will have to step down during the difficult ties to let the veterans take care of
the critical situations. It might not be in the best interest of new generation superstars but it will definitely keep the dominance of Spain in the Davis Cup. They have already won five titles including this year’s title, more than any other country.
Spain’s team consisted of Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco in last year’s edition of Davis Cup. It was extremely difficult to beat such a classy squad that consisted of two players from top 5 world
ranks and a cut-off of world number 24. These players combined hands and ended up winning the fifth title for their country in Seville earlier this month.
Soon after their triumph three of the four players including Nadal, Ferrer and Lopez decided to step down from their duty and allow youngsters to participate in this format of the game. It will also decrease the number of matches
played in a calendar year that will ease the nerves of Spanish top two performers.
This announcement from the president of tennis federation has enhanced the rumours about the decision made by the top tennis players of Spain. According to this announcement, all of these players can be called upon provided they
are required in order to confirm Spain’s victory in any tie. It was expected that title may change hands next year as the Spanish top class players were not participating in that tournament but this has definitely sent a clear cut message to all the rivals
that Spain is ready to defend its title at any cost.
