live in these demensions? Why is the existence of other entities such as spirits etc so difficult to believe?

What about the idea of the mind being able to leave the body and go to other dimensions?

  1. This is tricky. In physics, if you brought a two dimenional character, such as a drawing, into our three dimensional world, the said character could not survive because it's insides would cave in.

If we encountered an object from the 4th dimension, we could only see three dimensions, completely unaware of an extra dimension. I hope I make sense. For a better explanation, go to your local library and get Michio Kakus hyperspace.

Scientist are skeptical about spirits because it's scientifically impossible right now to prove their existance. Just as why many atheist denouce the existence of a god, or a super-natural being.

Of course, this brings into question what existence is, which is purely philosophical.

  2. They have to work out whether or not energy can be moved dimensionally first. This is because presently the law states that the sum total of the universe stays constant.

There is another theory  I like and it goes like this.

Imagine countless universes each expressing everything that can be manifested. These universes are all static with no motion. Our conciousness experiences these static worlds so quickly that they look as if they have motion and time but in reality we are centered, and the changes are taking place on a sub atomic level which is non matter. The changes are in a direct response to what we think, which is involving our conciousness in a co-creative  process with reality which is acting like a blank canvas.

  3. This seems like more of a mathematical question than supernatural. I read a book in college that was really good and would explain the whole dimensional thing so that anyone can understand with out having an advanced math degree.

"Flatterland" by Ian Stewart. Written around the year 2000. Its easy reading, check it out.

It is based on an older work called "Flatland" by Edwin Abbot Abbot in the late 1800s.

And for the record it is not so difficult to believe in other dimensions, just nearly impossible for us to prove, because we only know of three dimensions and can only see in those three.

  4. You probably have a misunderstanding of what a dimention is.

Many people confuse dimentions with parallel universes.

A dimention is essentially a direction. A line is one dimentional. A square is two dimentional, and a cube is three dimentional. The cube has length, width, and height, just like we do, and the space we occupy does. So we exist in the 3rd dimention.

But what about those other dimentions? Well mathematically there's an infinite number of dimentions. As 3 dimentional beings though, we can't perceive higher dimentions, should they exist. At least not directly.

An analogy was given by a physicist in a science magazine...

To paraphrase, he explained it as follows

Imagine the top of a coffee table, and that two dimentional beings live on this coffee table. Since they are two dimentional, they can perceive length and width but not height. In other words, the direction of "up off the surface of the table" doesn't exist to them.

Suddenly, someone in the third dimention places a can of coke on the coffee table. The can of coke is a cylinder, with length, width, and height, but the people in 2D land can't see the height or where the can came from (up) so they see a circle magically appear. When you lift the can off the table, you are lifting it up into the direction the 2D people can't perceive, so the circle magically disappears.

Likewise, if things in this universe have physical attributes which are expressed in dimentions beyond 3, this would be almost invisible to us. Some people believe that gravity is doing things we don't know about in other dimentions, and this is why it's so "weak" compared to other forces. There's also some speculation that certain theoretical particles, if they exist, are able to "see" these other dimentions.

As for entities, if they "lived" there, some part of them would still have to manifest in 3D and 2D and 1D like we do.

  5. The question of whether there are entities in other dimensions is similar to the question of whether there is life on other planets.  There may be entities in other dimensions, but there is no telling what they are like, whether they are intelligent, or even what their world view might be like.

Given the sheer number of stars and planets in the universe, it is extremely likely that life can be found outside of our atmosphere.  With only 13 (or 14) dimensions theorized, it's not impossible, but not highly probable that there are entities in other dimensions.  But, we might not know about all of the possible dimensions.

To believe in ghosts, you have to believe that the spirit survives the body.  You also have to have a sense that the spirit can exist in a place that is not readily accessible to most humans.  A person who doesn't believe those two things is not going to believe in ghosts no matter what they see or hear.  There will always be a "scientific" explanation to dismiss their experiences.

Concerning astral travel, that involves a whole other set of beliefs related to the spirit being able to leave the physical body and return to the body while the body is still alive.

Did I say these things are dependent upon belief?  Yes, I did.  Nonetheless, these things could be real.  Our sciences are still developing and we cannot observe or measure most of the things in our universe.  A few decades ago, we could not see an atom.  Now, we are able to accellerate particles to huge speeds and predict the existence of particles that we still have not seen.  Science moves on, and eventually, the unexplained will be explained and will become common knowledge.  I have that much faith in humanity.

  6. Because those other dimensions (which only exist according to string theory, which may or may not be true) are not the other dimensions that they talk about on Buffy.  They are vibrational dimensions, not physical ones.  And if spirits DO live there, why can you see them here?

This is the 'god of the gaps' argument.  The more we learn about the universe, the further away you have to keep pushing the supernatural until eventually you just have to acknowledge that yeah, maybe it doesn't actually exist after all.

If someone can mind-travel into other dimensions, scientists would love to hear about it .  That would be easy to test.

  7. Because the existance of these entities cannot be proven by scientific experiment. And the extra dimensions are very unstable anyway, and could collapse into singularities (which we don't see happening in reality). So it may be unlikely that these extra dimensions exist anyway.

  8. because they can not deal with the 3-d ,and is a tangible one,

how can you expect for them to deal with the rest, but really

science is not 100% -accurate,let say for example cancer,

is there a cure for cancer?not really, there are treatments,to recede it,but no cure at all, however there are people that ,with medicine and treatments the cancer has dissapeared, but that has happened to people who believe in the power of pray, and they also have been cured,so there is no reason to believe in the exactness of science,or scientists

don't let these speculations ,bring your intuition down, follow your heart and thinking, there is the balance

  9. First, the other poster is correct that string theory proposes ten dimensions. Other theories propose many more.

Second, we normally perceive the world in 3 dimensions. However, time is starting to become accepted as a 4th dimension by many scientist. Unfortunately very little is known about time. For instance physics can not yet explain why we have access to the past but not to the future (at least via it's mathematical equations).

Other entities may well live in other dimensions but first we have to find ways to detect these dimensions.

Third, minds being able to travel to other dimesnions may be possible but how to confirm this is still a difficulty.

Fourth, why are things hard to believe. I believe that some people have strongly held beliefs and anything that contradicts them is met with hostility, resistance, and often dismissed without applying the same reasoning they would to other evidence presented that did not contradict their beliefs.

Also, some people choose to not believe what they can not currently explain. Einstien rejected the idea of entangled particles because he could not find or explain a mechanism that would explain this phenomena. Experiments in quantum physics have provided supporting evidence for entanglement  (which was not possible in Einstien's life time)

    Facts do not change beliefs
