  1. rice cereal, bananas and small amonts of applesauce are constipators

don't stop giving him solids just try other foods like oatmeal and prunes or pears and any veggie..you could try the syrup too but keep feeding him if he goes the oppisite way and has diarrhea then you feed the foods the bind..

  2. my baby seemed to be a bit constipated the last few days (solids recently became a bigger part of her diet).  I gave her some applesauce and 12 hours later she had a big ol' p**p!

  3. My daughter is almost 9 now.  She had a lot of issues with constipation from birth until about 2 years old.  Our pediatrician told us to give her a bottle of pear juice every day.  That sounds simple but it worked miracles!

When I stopped breast feeding, she had to have soy formula.  That made things worse with constipation.  At that point, the doc told us to put Senokot in her first bottle every morning.  That also took care of things right away.  It is a stool softener but not a stimulant.  It is also natural & easy on babies systems.  You can get it over the counter at all pharmacies.  I think Wal-Mart has a new store brand equivalent as well.

Best of luck to you!  I know how heart breaking it is to see your little one in pain.  Try the pear juice first.... then if you need more help, try Senokot. =)

  4. I was told no karo or any type of medication without doctors advice.

I was told to give more foods such as prunes and pears to help with regulation.

  5. With my baby rice cereal seem to constipate him.  My mother in law adviced me to add 2 spoons of prunes stage 1 gerber.  It really solved the problem.  Don't give your baby too much prunes as it will loosen stools too much.  I hope this helps

  6. I would either stop solids (if baby  is under 6 months) or (if he's over 6 months)  try different, less binding solids.  Rice cereal, bananas and applesauce are very constipating. If baby is over 6 months and non-binding solids are still a problem, I would, again, stop for a while.  Baby doesn't really need solids until around a year, and his digestion may not be ready to handle them this soon.

  7. karo is one suggestion but you could also try a little water to drink regularly.  or feed baby a little prune.  or an ounce or two of juice.  all could help.  this is all normal when they start solid foods. he may constipate again if so keep up on the water or juice for a while.  don't stop the solid foods.

  8. A few things.  1) If the child is under 6 months, I would stop solids and wait until he's reached 6 months before trying again.  It's a sign that his body isn't ready.

    2) When you start solids, you should only be starting with a couple tablespoons.  If you start with too much, the baby's body may have trouble adjusting.

    3) If he's past 6 months, seems ready for solids, but is having constipation with just a couple tablespoons of rice cereal, try oatmeal or peaches/pears or some other food instead.

I've had four babies, all breastfed, and then started solids at 6-7 months.  I haven't had trouble with constipation with any of them.  And if I did, I would pursue one of the above, wait a couple months longer, or try juice, NOT karo syrup.
