  1. yea if the crickets shut up then something is coming through you better get ready

  2. Only if your name is (Ω) Jack Sparrow. He became one with sea turtles, so I suppose someone could grow to understand crickets.

  3. No, you just get ticks. Just kidding.

Yes. Sure, why not? If the crickets stop chirping something is close. Maybe the Bear sneaking up behind you.

  4. its known that crickets make there noise according to the temp around them and what type of cricket they are.

  5. Yes and much more.  But its just not the crickets, its when every thing in the woods shuts up. Its from something they fear. They all became quiet because they are listening and hiding. After some time you learn how to move about with out alarming the local animals. So you may have some birds flying about you in a nearby tree singing away, suddenly stop and fly away from an approaching human or predator.

I am sure many squirrel hunters have seen the squirrels stop playing in the trees when a hawk or owls flies overhead or when another hunter walks by.

Well in time all the animals can tell you things by their behavior. Animal behavior can even let you know if its going to rain or of a coming snow storm.

In order to lean how this works you have to spend entire days just sitting and watching nature with out disturbing it. Then you learn how to slowly walk about, taking a step, waiting for several moment before another step. No slapping bugs, talking, radios, rapid movements or noise of any kind. This is stalking as hunters call it. You look where each foot will go before you step there and look for a *soft* spot, a place where you will crush the least amount of forest debris. Your foot slowly presses down, you feel the ground with your foot. Some people are so good at this, they can sneak right up to a deer that’s feeding.

After much practice and being alone for long periods of time you will feel tuned in to nature.

I spent months alone in the wilderness enjoying that feeling. Heck it was sad to leave! Just spend 2 days alone in the woods some time sitting still in a tree stand and you will get the idea. But you must have patience of a saint because nature’s animals don’t keep time; it may be hours before you see much. And at night you can hear all the critters running around and if you’re lucky can hear coyotes or wolves hunting and making a kill in the dark. Believe me that’s more of a adrenalin rush than any movie you could watch.

Both answers above me are right.

That noise crickets make is a mating call, a way of communication. If its too cold and makes them feel a bit dormant they stop, sudden noises, heavy rain or a animal startling them does also.

  6. Your web site is not loading for me but...  Can someone read signs by the crickets?  Yeah, if they suddenly quit chirping something's wrong.  Get outta there...

Seriously, old-timers could tell much of what was happening and going to happen in their immediate environment.  For example, when I was a kid an old man told me it was gonna rain.  The sky was clear and so I questioned him.  He said, look at the ants.  They're climbing.  Sure enough, they were making a bee-line up the trunk of an old Sweet Acacia (Huisache) Tree!  Sure enough, a couple of hours later a downpour followed.

So I'll have to say yes, someone attuned to his environment can learn many things by paying attention.
