It's happened to me alot! Over the years I've gotten over it but even though I'm in college now, people still generalize somewhat over me being homeschooled.

What positive or negative things come to your mind when somebody tells you they're homeschooled?

  1. I am being homeschooled right now. I am a senior in high school, and I'm off to college next year.

I definitely hear all the stereotypes everytime someone asks me where I go to school. When I answer saying that I'm homeschooled, they have that weird expression on their face, and just answer with an "oh.". It bothers me, because I know they think I don't do anything.

Usually they tell me, "oh, so you don't really do anything". I can't tell you how much this bothers me! I went to public school until 9th grade... I'm doing so much more work now through homeschooling. Public school was filled with drama, and we never really got anything done.

Homeschooling was definitely a better choice for me, and I would never consider going back.

    I love homeschooling!

  2. When I hear that one of my kids' friends is homeschooled, I am DELIGHTED!   In General, the difference in homeschooled children and public school children is night and day.  The former tend to have much better character and morals.  They can relate to a broad genre of age groups as they are not programed to relate with only a certain age group or class.

A homeschool kid usually has a much broader view of life and are more traveled than a public school student and many but not all, are Christians.

Those are the conclusions I jump to, which are based on past, personal experience.

LOL are getting the--homeschool kids are just so sheltered and unsocialized routine?  It's pretty funny isn't it?

Home School mom of 6, extremely well educated, well traveled, well versed, social children.

  3. I've met such a wide range of homeschoolers that I don't jump to conclusions. People vary greatly!

  4. Well since I homeschool my Daughter I am always excited to hear when other homeschool. I have good thoughts. I think to myself, "What a wise decision to make in this day and age."

  5. I was homeschooled too and have found the streotypes astounding. However, even now, years and years later, I have to admit that I do have my own stereotypes. I always ask, "Why were you homeschooled?" I think it is this question that helps me form an idea. I was homeschooled because the public schools in NC are awful and it so happens our school district is the worst in the county. Private school is expensive, and although we are Christian, it wasn't the driving force in homeschooling. When someone says, "Because my parents are Christians," or ,"We just were." I do begin to form stereotypes. Why? Because I knew those kids too. Everyone had their reason and I could usually tell just by the way some kids acted or dressed as to what group they belonged to.

Now, typically when I think of homeschoolers, I think of disciplined kids who are very smart, learning many things but especially the things they like since that is the way I was. However, after seeing how unmotivated my younger brothers are my perceptions of homeschooling are changing. The truth is, if we want peoples perceptions of homeschoolers to change then we just will have to keep getting the word out.

We weren't all locked away in our houses studying Bob Jones textbooks and refusing to do anything anything that is remotely considered social.

  6. I'm homeschooled, and when I tell people, the reaction I get is "Why would you want to be homeschooled? You never get to see people blahblahblah, you don't actually learn blahblahblah, you're stuck in the house all day blahblahblah." Which I must say is a very unfair assumption of how I life my life. I see tons of people, I learn alot more than my public schooled friends, and I spend time at dance and singing classes, and being outside.

It really annoys me how people think about homeschoolers. I'm going to start snarking at people who go to public school. Ha. I think we should change the term from "homeschooled" to "school-where-you-actually-learn-about-l... :D

  7. my daughters 3rd grade teacher was homeschooled, I was overjoyed.  and I am always impressed when someone tells me they've been hsed.

one of the teens that worked on our farm was hsed and now shes off to college, her younger brother and sister still being hsed at home.  I really dont have any negative feelings about it because I've seen so much positive.  If I jump to any conclusions, it is that they must have had a great childhood!

I'm sure you will always run into some ppl that will be shocked to hear that you were a hser, but that is just because it is not the norm.  Dont sweat it, we all know your smart ;o)

    good luck at college!

  8. I have learned not to make assumptions.

  9. i was home schooled and i personally think home schooled people are smarter because they actually learnt something not just went to school to talk to friends.

  10. I homeschool my 2 children but I do have to admit that I have a  few things I usually assume about homeschooling families.  I first assume that homeschooling families have a close family with a mother and father in the home.  I do know of a couple of single mothers that homeschool, but that is not what I am going to assume is the situation.  I also usually assume they are Christian, although I know that is not always the case either.  The main thing I have seen is that homeschooling families are always interesting to me.  They all have their own unique reasons for homeschooling, and their own way of learning.
