  1. When the person calls a landline from enternet sites is cheaper, like 0.5 c per min, and to cell phone 20c. There are special cards which are cheaper too. But landline to landline or cellphone is expensive, and people usually do not use these options.

  2. Get a satellite phone. It's real popular over there.

  3. I'm sure it would be.  You are calling from one Country to Another Country.

My wife and I travel for business out of the country.  We just started using magicJack about 7 months ago and we just love it.  We bought ours from this place.  You can reach them at there e-mail.  humminax3@yahoo.com   e-mail them and they will tell you all about it.  It cost me 45.00 for the device and that included one year of service.  Next year it will only cost me 19.95 for one year of service.

Now they told me if you can call any phone number in the United States and Canada as if it were a local call.  It's true.  I call my friends and family all the time around the US.   Now I know both of you live in London and Africa.  They said to use two magicJacks and as long as you are calling a magicJack number to a magicJack number it a local call anywhere in the world.

    e-mail them at humminax3@yahoo.com

  4. If you are both on gtalk, it is for free.

    Go here

    http://www.google.com/talk/

    to download it

You need a mike and your sound card and speakers. All but the mike usually come with your computer. The mike does not.

There are several others including yahoo and Skype - I have them all as not all my family are on the same programme.

I am in Canada and I talk to South African relatives every day - sometimes for hours - for free.

  5. there is a special number that we dial when we live in the Uk and that connects us to SA at 4p per minute...so a call that was three hours long will cost him +- £7.20  and that is not expensive
