    This really surprises me, since I'd always thought only the actual donor could sign the consent forms. Guess I was wrong.

  3. The legal next of kin can make that decision.  If more than one, all most be in agreement.

    Whether someone has life insurance or not is irrelevant to the question.  Choosing to donate a body on the sole basis of whether you can afford the funeral or not, is a little short sided.

    If it is that big of a concern, get a life insurance policy big enough to cover funeral expenses.  Then you can freely CHOOSE if that is what you want to do.
