If someone has a purple belt in Karate, what level of Karate are they on?

White

Yellow

Orange

Purple

Blue

Green

Brown

Black

Normally purple belt is just below brown belt in shukokai/shotokan and my style of jiu-jitsu if that helps.

I did tang soo do and the belts went as follows:

White

Black

So purple was an intermediate rank.

Black belt and white belt are the top 2 level I think. I think purple belt is for beginners.

It'll probably be somewhat dependent upon what school they're in. In some schools, it's around go-kyu (5th kyu -- kyu, if you don't know, descend from 10 to 1 generally, though ranking systems are arbitrary. There's no hard an fast rule that there need to be 10 ranks below black or 10 ranks above)... I think when I was doing USSD Kenpo Karate way back when, it was 7th kyu, but this may have been a junior rank.

Roughly, the way to understand the difference in Kyu and Dan ranks tends to be that the Kyu ranks are the ranks where you're learning enough to actually start studying the art (Which really begins at shodan -- 1st degree black belt). Too many seem to have the mistaken view that the black belt means they're a master. It's more like "generally proficient".

It can vary from style to style or school to school, but it's typically about 1/2 way towards black belt.
