  1. My Aunt has an IQ of 75.  She does have a job, she goes to school and church, she does live on her own.  But she was put into special education, and she can't drive.

She's very independent though for being mildly retarded.

  2. I have 3 7th graders with 73-79IQ One is on grade level, with standard modifications, except for math (3rd grade) another is on 4-5th grade level and the third has language processing problems so on 2-3rd but the most social of the group. To look or chat with them you would never know, unless you asked too many questions.

Many people in your daily life have that IQ but have motivation, encouragement from family or school and are quite successful!

Sometimes there are other factors so it is very individual so too much reliance on a number is a mistake. Encourage a person's strengths. There are plenty of people with high IQ's I wish were not driving !

  3. I.Q. doesn't limit anyone these days anymore. I think there are so many more things to consider.

Can he/she read? or do they have weaker skills in reading?

Can they do math ? or do they have weaker skills in math?

    Comprehension? Social Skills? Behavior?

If so they should have extra/special help in these areas.

  4. Depends what test were they given... not all are the same.  Was this test given once?  Or was it given three years ago with a score of 83 and this latest time was it a 79, for example?

  5. My son has an IQ of 43 - he is able to live semi-independently (he is helped with bills and planning), he went to regular school thru high school, he is able to drive but does not drive often, he owns his own business, and more.  Someoen with an IQ of 79 can be expected to do just about anything, just do it a bit slower and with perhaps a bit of support.

  6. 100 is average and under 70 is mentally retarded.  79 is low but not low enough that the person could not be independent.  I would think they could get a drivers license and a job.  They may or may not be in special ed. Under 70 is always but above depend on other factors as well.
