If someone is called a 'hustler'?

Talking about games like snooker/pool/etc. what does the term 'hustler' mean?

Is it similar to the term 'shark'?

Means like they act like they suck, but they really dont, and they get them to bet alot of money, and end up kicking the persons a$$ in pool.

Just my unofficial understanding of the terms... but

A "Shark" is an expert pool player who makes money challenging others to playing games for money.  He's good enough to earn a living shooting stick.

A "Hustler" is a "shark" who pretends to be a clumsy beginning player.  His method is to get his intentionally lose a set number of games or a set amount of money.  He entices his opponent into a sense of overconfidence, then talks him into a large "double or nothing" type bet.  Then he runs the table, earns his "lost" money back, and a tidy profit on top.

"Straight" pretty much has the answer to your question.....the biggest thing to remember when you are not sure if it is a con or not is to remember an old wise quote....."beware of alligator bearing fruit".....another way to say it is....."if it sounds to good to be true..then it is probably not".......good luck!

This is a good question.  Hustling and playing for money are not the same thing.  Hustling is all about putting on a big show to con someone out of their money through the game of pool.  There's a big difference between hustling and playing a straight-up match with money on the line.  I will partake in the latter from time to time.  To shark someone means that you are using techniques to upset or distract your opponent or get inside their head.  There are so many sharking techniques that I've seen, I wouldn't even know where to begin listing them.  There is a certain amount of "gamesmanship" in pool, but when it ceases to be good-natured and sporting, it becomes sharking.  This is why I don't like it when people call me a pool shark.  They may mean well, but they don't really understand what they are implying.  Again, very good question.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
