  1. No, using poles is not necessary, especially when you're starting out.  I skied without poles for two years.  Poles are mainly used for balance on steep runs.  When you're starting out, you want to concentrate on what your skis are doing, not poles.  Poles can get in the way when you are learning, and its best to concentrate on your technique.  Once you feel comfortable with green runs, try with poles and move on to the blue runs.  Good luck.

  3. It's personal preference.

  4. I disagree with the other post.  Poles are an important part of timing your turns, and they can help you get up when you fall on the steep stuff.  While poles certainly aren't critical when you're learning the basics, the sooner you use them, the better off you'll be in the long run.  They help with balance and timing.  If you can turn on command, you should use your poles.  If you're turning right, plant your pole with your right hand slightly in front of you and turn around the pole.  opposite for the left.

  5. I'd have to agree with rykim718.
