If someone is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed, what does that mean?

The man in question, his great grandfather is my great great great great grandfather. Does that make sense, and is there a simpler way of stating my relation to him?

  1. If he is someone you like you could just say you are cousins. Unless someone is talking about geneology they need not know the exact kind of cousin.

In my youth we called them kissing cousins. (in other words we are related but could still date as its too far removed to matter).

  2. If you are in the same generation coming down from a common ancestor, there are no removes.

Example: Your first cousins' children are your first cousins once removed.  However, your first cousins' children are 2nd cousins to your children as they are in the same generation.

You are 2nd cousins to your parents first cousins.  You will be 2nd cousins once removed to the children of your parents' first cousins, you will be 2nd cousins  twice removed to the grandchildren of your first cousins and, you will be 2nd cousins, three times removed to the great gandchildren of your first cousins.

  3. try googling cousin realitions or something similar, i can remember seeing a web site dedicated to showing how people are related (as in cousins etc - like they're your mum's cousin, but what does that make them to you? sort of thing)

i'll edit if i find it again - im sure its in my bookmarked thingys somewhere..
