If someone knows about committing crime by another person and hides it, is this crime? Which law is about?

Does the USA-law provide the punishment for hiding of crime that was committed by someone or is about committing by someone?

  1. Yes, that would be a crime....once the crime is committed.


  2. Yes. Knowing about a crime, and helping to hide it makes

    you an accessory to, (part of), the crime.

    Knowing about it before hand is worse.

    You can be charged for either offense.

  3. Yes.  It is called being an "accessory", "accessory after the fact." or "aiding and abetting."  

    "Receiving Stolen Goods," and "Conspiracy," are crimes in themselves.  There is also the "felony murder rule" which says that you are guilty of murder if you commit a felony in which someone is killed.  Under this law, the driver of the getaway car is as guilty as the guy who pulls the trigger.

  4. If you hide the crime before or after it is committed, you are going to break the law and be held criminally responsible.  If you lie to the police, all the more trouble for you.  Fess up and save yourself!
