Question:

If someone locks themselves in the car to resist arrest, as a cop, how can you legitimately get him/her out?

I was watching a reality tv show where a person was pulled over, but refused to cooperate with the officer when asked for his Driver's license and papers. The driver and the cop started arguing, when the officer asked the driver to get out of the car. The driver refused and then locked himself in the car. I never got to see how the episode ended, so I was wondering, as a police officer faced with the same situation, how would you legitimately get the driver out of the car?

  1. Well put in that situation a police officer must assume that the person is armed, so the first thing to do is to give them fair warning while keeping their eyes on what the person is doing, next they will probably smash the windows, and then tazer the person. Once that happens they can get them out of the car and arrested

  2. I would break the window and drag the guy out of the car and cuff him.  Yes, it is legal.  The cop can always say that the guy was wanted for "something" or had drugs, etc.  Locking oneself in a car will only hurt the car.

  3. I would place them under arrest and then use my window tool to bust a window and drag them out.  Wait, I just did that in Anchorage on Tuesday to a car jacker.

  4. I think I saw that same episode, the cop ended up setting the car on fire.  That will teach 'em.

  5. As logic said, thats exactly what I have had to do.

  6. Yup, your first answer is absolutely correct.  You need not look any further.  Give him your Best Answer vote.

  7. The cop could quite simply smash the window with his baton, taze/pepper spray the driver if he continues to refuse to come along, and drag him out.

  8. Pepper spray down the defroster vent or driver's side door frame has worked for me. But that's only if he/she is in the car alone and definitely no kids in the car.

  9. Break the window.

  10. The police do not taze people as often as you might think based on TV shows. At $50 a cartridge, you better have a legitimate reason to taze them... And god forbid something happens to them because you tazed them, everyone wants to know if it was absolutely necessary or there were other options to handle the situation. Nowdays its too much of a bureaucracy for officers to do their jobs right, its all about politics and what looks good on paper. Now that Im done ranting :) to answer your question...

They would simply break a window as many others suggested, then they could take the keys to make sure they dont drive off then open the door or drag them out through the window.
