  1. Stopping the door part way up will not hurt the door or the door opener.

    A properly installed door is balanced by springs so the lifting force and the closing force are about the same.  The way to tell is to disconnect the auto opener and put the door part way up.  If it doesn't go up or down then it's balanced.

    Once the garage door open stops no electricity is use.  If the door is a little out of balance the opener will hold it with friction.

    If the door is too far out of balance it will open from the springs or close from gravity and that could damage the opener.


  2. no, that is kind of what they are built to do. and no, the opener does not burn any electricity to hold the door in place. you may actually be causing less wear by not opening it the whole way.

  3. I never had.  We always did this when we had dogs running loose in our other garage and never had a problem. It should be fine.
