and the SSA has NOT been notified of their death... is it possible that those benefits are still be issued to someone somewhere?

I have a family member who died 5 yrs. ago and I just found out that his SSN is still active, and he was never reported to the SSA as deceased. I know that at the time of his death, he was receiving SS disability benefits.

  1. County registrars send monthly reports of death certificate filings to Social Security.  If the survivors don't report the death, Social Security will find out pretty quick anyway.

  2. So get a copy of the death certificate and mail it to the SSA.

  3. Highly unlikely, but nevertheless, to be absolutely certain, I would suggest that you contact your local Social Security Office in order to make a final determination.
