Your friend can breathe easy, there's no such crime as "posting an archeological digging device through a letterbox" - thank god for that, otherwise Archeoligcal tools mail order companies would be in big trouble!

If someone called the Police with that, they'd laugh at them!

The Mailbox is actually considered property of the postal service and not personal property. All mailboxes are this way. So depending on the severity of damage it could be a federal offense.

if the police come for him he should just tel the truth that he was drunk and it was for a  mess, not to cause any harm to any one. but he really should go to the house and tel them he was drunk and had no idea what he was doing. maybe even bring a little gift to the women of the house.  but i think he will be fine

Whilst you can be done for picking a lock, I don't think you can be done for picking a letterbox.

Say it was a gift...

Also; archaeologists do not tend to use picks. For large jobs, they use a mattock (not easily postable) - smaller jobs require various sizes of trowel.
