If someone signs a birth certificate but they are not the biological parent do they have to pay?

  1. You probably have to go to court for a DNA test to show you are not the parent.


  2. It all depends if you supported the child in the first few days of birth. If you did and signed the birth certificate, then yes. You are it's registered father.

Birth certificates have almost no legal significance.  The way it works is, the mother seeks child support from the father.  The father either admits parentage or denies it.  If her denies it, then the court orders paternity testing.  If he is not the father then he doesn't have to pay support no matter who signed the birth certificate.

  4. Depends on the court ruling.  If a couple presents the child to their community as "theirs", then yes, both are responsible.

    There are men who are not sure of the child's father, that nonetheless call it their own.  So in the eyes of the court, it is theirs and their responsibility to support.

    If you want to weasel out now ... do it quickly.

  5. Yes.  If they claim to be the father at birth, they are legally the father.
