  1. If you know their surname you could try an online UK phonebook. Or try googling them. Maybe their on facebook or myspace.

  2. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) handles this sort of thing while ever the person leaving Australia remains an Australian citizen.

If they relinquish Australian citizenship, then the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade  no longer takes any responsibility for them as they are no longer the responsiblity of the Commonwealth of Australia if they don't want to be an Australian citizen.

The responsibility for finding a person once they are no longer an Australian citizen would rest with the private individuals eg family members and what ever co-operation you could get from British authorities.

First obtain this persons birth certificate from the registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages in the relevant state. There is an Australia wide web site to go to and you select your state or you can get google and call up your state separately if you wish.

    http://www.australia.gov.au/Births,_Deat...

Next for enquires as to the whereabouts of this person, if you are looking for a person who is missing at present go to the Department of Foreign affairs and Trade (DFAT) site:

    http://www.dfat.gov.au/contacts.html

From here you can get contact details to make enquires about this person and find out if DFAT would be willing to help you find them.

If that option fails, or you need extra assistance from the UK then I would contact UK alternatives using the following sites.

Factsheet to assit you tract missing relatives.

    http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/pdfs...

    UK Police http://police.homeoffice.gov.uk/

    http://search.homeoffice.gov.uk/search?

    http://search.homeoffice.gov.uk/search?q...

It appears that you have to get in touch with the Home Office if you are to find anything out about missing persons in the UK. I was not sure about this. I am not familiar with European laws and cultures. However, if you are looking for a missing person good luck and I hope you find the person in question.
