Someone else and i were sharing a youtube account and they sent me my IP number in a private message saying that they will contact my ISP if i didn't give them the account. Does this threat hold any water? Also, what else can they do with my IP number?

  1. They really can't do anything. They would have to go after YouTube for not supplying adequate security.

  2. Witheld any evidence and let the Policemen get it through legal means.

  3. http://www.youtube.com/t/terms - point 3 pretty much makes it clear that you're supposed to have your own account and not share one.

But don't worry about it.  If the account is effectively yours that they are sharing, change the password and don't tell them what it is.  If not, just get any videos that are yours and then set up your own account.

They can't do much with your IP address and unless you have a "static" (never changing) IP address, they would also have to tell your ISP dates and times for the ISP to have any hope of figuring out who you are and ISPs aren't going to get involved in that without a court order.

As long as you have good security on your computer, your IP address isn't very helpful to them.  They could post it on the internet and ask people to harass you but your security would block them.  And if you do have a static IP, just drop a line to your ISP if you notice that things seem a bit funny, explain and ask if you can change your IP.

Security equals a firewall set to hide your computer (not the Windows one), anti-virus, anti-spyware and all your software (including Windows) should be up-to-date.  You get a fair bit of protection from most broadband modems.

Not sure if your IP changes?  Go here and then go there again after shutting your computer down and restarting it:
