I was adopted at a young age. Although I knew who my parents were and where they lived, etc., they didn't want anything to do with me, and we never had a proper relationship (not for want of trying on my part, it has to be said).

Both my parents died in a car accident about a week ago. In their will, they left me a family heirloom of great sentimental value (because I was their first child, and the item, in family tradition, is always passed on to the first child).

They have two other children, who want to dispute my claim to this heirloom. They say because I didn't live with them, didn't know them, etc., I have no right inheriting something with so much family value, and they are threatening to take me to court if I don't allow them to have it.

Both my parents were of sound mind when they made the will. What are the chances that their two other children would be awarded the item if they take me to court over it? The item is not worth anything money-wise, and only holds sentimental value.

Please help. Thank you.

  1. In my experience, it would be highly unlikely for them to be awarded the item. In fact, it would be a waste of time to take you to court.

But on another note, I can understand completely how they feel and I think you should give the item to them. After all, they clearly had a much closer relationship with your parents than you did, even if you wanted a relationship with them. To be honest, I'd want to take you to court, too, even if it would be a waste of time and money.

Why is it so important to you anyway? You didn't know them.

EDIT: If you really do understand how your siblings feel, then you should offer to inherit something of much less importance to "hold onto".

  2. It is a valid will, chances are close to zero that your siblings will get it.

But the court battle will be costly.

Consider whether this is worth fighting for.
