If something were to happen to a king and a someone were to witness it, who would they report it to?

I am writing a story and it has a medieval setting. In it, the king is captured and the guards see that he is missing. Who would the guards report it to? I know it would be a high-ranking person but i don't know what the position of the person is exactly.

if the kind has a son report it to the son, but maybe some ranked religion figure as well

I would report it to the King's Guard.

The advisor, or next in line to the throne. If there is no prince it would be a cousin. Or if these don't work the Queen is the last I can think of.

A noble is the next highest ranking, but there are many nobles, so it would be a noble. But it could be the king's son if he had one. Then the Prince would become king.
