I'm trying to distinguish between a true experiment and a quasi-experiment and need to know if the presence of a control groups is a necessity for a true experiment (rather than just typical).

  1. Random assignment into groups acts as a way to control variables.  You only use a control group when interaction with the experimenter (giving attention) or drug research .....it depends upon what you are doing.  And yes, random assignment is very much a TRUE experiment..    More the norm than having a control group.  (psych prof)
